Carpenter Ants are often called Bull Ants. They range from black to reddish brown in color. Size may vary from 1/4 to 3/4 inch. You may see either wingless workers or winged reproductive ants from the colony. A Florida Carpenter Ant looks like a Termite, but it is not. One of its unique characteristics is its large size.
As Carpenter Ants bore their nest they leave behind piles of saw dust like material called frass. Faint clicking or rustling sounds within walls may also be an indication of the presence of carpenter ants. The Carpenter Ant left unchecked can nest in the home causing significant damage to framing, sheathing or even furniture. Trails are more often found along carpet edges, door frames, fence tops, etc...
An occasional ant does not indicate the presence of a nest in your home. Scouts from the nest will travel up to the length of a football field to find food. Continuous or numerous ants are a more accurate sign of nesting. If you suspect an infestation, you should have an inspection as soon as possible to avoid any further damage.
